Today I traded in Marianne, my faithful 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo, and I kind of feel like I lost a best friend. This song (‘Marianne’ by Tori Amos), which she was named for, is in honor of her.
“Marianne represents the death of the girlhood.” - Tori Amos
tuna, rubber, a little blubber in my igloo, yes
and I knew you, pigtails and all
girls when they fall
and they said Marianne killed herself
and I said not a chance, not a chance
don’t you love the girls, ladies, babes, old bags
who say she was so pretty, why
why, why, why did she crawl down in the old deep ravine?
c’mon pigtails, girls, and all those sailors
get your bags and hold down
won’t you just hold down, hold down
‘cause Ed is watching my every sound, I said
they’re watching my every sound
the weasel squeaks faster than a seven day week
I said Timmy and that purple monkey
are all down at Bobby’s house
making themselves pesters and lesters and jesters
and my traitors of kind
and I’m just having thoughts, I said
I’m just having thoughts of, having thoughts, having
Marianne, she could outrun the fastest slug, she could
I’m just having thoughts of Marianne
quickest girl in the frying pan
I’m just having thoughts of Marianne.

My painting gets to hang next to this DESTINY sculpture I’ve been admiring all semester in the Junior/Senior exhibition! Everything’s hung a bit too squished for my liking, but yay!

‘unknowing I must soon unpetal’ has been chosen for inclusion in the 2012 Junior + Senior Exhibition at Herter Gallery! The show will be hung tomorrow and will be up through May 12th.
when you sing, when you sing
the stars fill up my eyes
galaxies pour down my cheeks, galaxies
galaxies, they flood the street
galaxies
when we dance, when we dance
eels and sea grass float on by
I’m 10,000 leagues beneath the sea, 10,000 leagues
10,000 leagues beneath the green
10,000 leagues
when we kiss, when we kiss
bears and boulders vibrate through the air
gravity is dead you see, no gravity
all I need is beating red
no gravity

My selections to be judged for entry in the 2012 Junior + Senior Exhibition. I decided to keep it simple instead of trying to cram as many paintings as would fit in my studio- they need room to breathe (although they are communicating with each other in diptychs and triptychs today!)
Please check out my artist Facebook page (and give it a ‘Like’!) to see the final 20 works that made up my BFA Thesis Exhibition!
My friend and fellow artist Sam Zaruba wrote a blog post about my Thesis Exhibition for NYPOP! Click here to read the whole thing.
When stepping back and staring at the series of brightly pigmented watercolors, I am filled with awe in a way that I haven’t experienced since seeing a Jackson Pollack in person for the very first time. The exhibition space was set up with a series of cadmium hued macro images of flowers…
